Classic American Burger
Juicy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced — this is the classic burger done right. No fancy tricks, just fresh ingredients and proper technique.
Ingredients
For the patties:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80% lean / 20% fat is best)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 4 brioche or hamburger buns
Toppings:
- 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
- Lettuce leaves
- Tomato slices
- Red onion slices
- Pickles
- Ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise — to taste
Instructions
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently form into patties about 1 inch thick — don't overwork the meat, it makes them tough. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent puffing while cooking.
- Season both sides generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Drizzle with Worcestershire sauce.
- Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat. It should be hot — around 400°F (200°C).
- Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side for medium, or until internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C). Only flip once!
- In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and close the lid to melt.
- Slice the buns and toast them cut-side down on the grill or in a pan for 30 seconds until golden.
- Assemble: Spread sauce on the toasted buns, add lettuce, tomato, onion, then the cheesy patty, pickles, and top bun. Serve immediately while hot.
Pro Tips 💡
- Don't press down on the patty with a spatula while cooking — you'll squeeze out all the juices!
- Let the cooked patties rest for 2 minutes before assembling — this keeps the meat juicy.
- Room-temperature beef cooks more evenly than cold beef.
